Bright Beginnings

The Bright Beginnings project helps new parents in Pickens County nurture the cognitive and language development of their babies through reading. Families, including single mothers and the neediest parents, who have babies born at Mountainside Medical Center in Jasper receive a gift basket of informative books about parenting and bright colorful board books for their newborn. PCRC volunteers visit prenatal classes to help parents learn how to read to their babies. They explain how research has documented the importance of reading to young children between the ages 0-2. By providing both the books and the guidance, children in Pickens County will enter kindergarten ready to succeed.

Bright Beginnings is a collaborative project with other literacy groups in the county. PCRC chair for this project is Ms. Amelia McIntyre, Parent and Community Involvement Coordinator for the Pickens County School System. The council received a $3,000 grant from Target Stores to help fund this project.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity Pickens County is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry seeking to eliminate poverty housing, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and actions. Our council partners with this organization by providing a new wood bookcase stocked with books for each new home. Books are donated for this project by our members and from various groups in our community.
